This year will be worth it!

First day of school is here. Our student-athletes have returned to the court and to their studies. They have been reunited with their new and old classmates, friends, teachers, and have been able to stay in our facilities, settling in and ready to start again at conquering new challenges and goals.

We have had the pleasure of being able to talk to one of our student-athletes, her name is Terezie and she will be with us all year.

She is a 10th grader at Emilio Sanchez American School, and is looking forward to focusing on her studies as well as her training. As with most of our students, her main goal this year is to improve her tennis, studies, and languages, in this case English. We have managed to form a great blend of cultures, where our student-athletes can communicate, learn and develop their skills together.

The calendar of activities and weekend tournaments is one of the cornerstones of our annual calendar. Student-athletes need a break to get back into the 6:15 a.m. Monday morning routine.

Another great goal of our students is to earn an athletic scholarship thanks to tennis to a top tier universities in the United States. The Emilio Sanchez Academy offers a great balance between tennis and studies, making it an ideal combination to achieve their dreams in the future.

This year more than ever we want them to enjoy the Academy as if there were no tomorrow. We want them to grow personally and professionally, we want the Emilio Sanchez Academy to be their new home away from home. The entire staff is committed to do everything we can to make your children feel comfortable.

Year after year we manage to create a family, both current students and alumni, and they will take memories from here and carry them for life.

The calendar of activities and weekend tournaments is one of the cornerstones of our annual calendar. Student-athletes need a break to get back into the 6:15 a.m. Monday morning routine.

When our students are asked about their level of happiness at the Academy, they respond that they would never have imagined such an enriching experience added to their journey. As the expression goes “He who sows reaps”, we want our students to be constant in their time here with us, we want them to be able to really enjoy the journey as well as the results that this experience will bring them.

Start so good that they can not ignore you

The beginning is approaching and school is just around the corner. The school year means that summer is over. It’s time to start again, it’s time to say goodbye to the most desired season for many people. It’s back to normal, where the kids go back to school. Now it is time to start working on yourself and your path. It’s a start full of excitement and joy, which seems to come loaded with work and rewards.

From the ES Academy, we are here to help you and all those student-athletes who will be part of the course during the 2022-2023 season. We are very excited about the students that follow and the new additions for this coming year.

Start your new routine; the meeting with friends and new friendships, the daily training, learning new subjects, reading new books, and setting and achieving new goals. The combination between tennis and school is the essence of our players and that is why we want to be involved in their process of adaptation and guide them in the best possible way. We want them to feel at home, we want to be their second family.

This year we have a new goal, we know that these vacations, after two years of uncertainty, have charged energy, and… Why not channel it and focus it on new routines? On new paths? On new goals? From the ES Academy, we will help you and your student-athletes to use the energy you give off to face all those sports and school goals you set for yourselves.

We want the sport to be part of this energy. Therefore, we will take care of every detail of your tennis and professional career, we will try to make you become a better professional. We know that you are going to give your all, with your values and new focuses, and we will do our best to be by your side.

You will feel at home. During the day-to-day, our student-athletes have unique experiences that help them grow as an individual and as a person.

Their schedule during their year is busy and rigorous, they start with their morning training, performing every day at their best. During those tennis hours, they get to have a mix of our unique tennis system where the athletes work on the court in a divided session with 30% drills, 30% life balls, and 30% competition leaving the 10% remaining up to the coach and the needs of the players. The court sessions that the athletes have are led by their tutors, each tutor has a group of an average of 7 athletes per coach. The ES coach who tutors each athlete is responsible for planning, developing, and reporting the performance and development of the players. During that planning stage, the coach will plan the practices according to the needs of the players, to develop the player’s strengths and tools for the player’s game. The tennis practices are twice a day, during the morning the athletes have 3 hours of tennis and play one more hour on some afternoons that they have tennis. Combined with tennis and working hand to hand are our other 2 fundamental pillars the mental and the physical pillar. Those 2 other fundamental pillars of the athlete are developed during their week in a series of sessions during their afternoon training. On the fitness side, athletes work on different exercises depending on which stage of the pyramid of development they are on. Different exercises and daily routines are planned by our fitness director fully experienced in junior to professional athletes. On the mental pillar which is key for our athletes, they get to work outside of the court on all of those important aspects that the athlete needs to be able to have a healthy, good, and successful sports career.

Our student-athletes wouldn’t be student-athletes without the educational side. During their schedule of the day, our students have a separate time for their face-to-face classes in our own private school onsite. The school that starts in the middle grades is divided into periods of classes with A & B days creating a rotational system where students have different classes starting from core classes to specific grade educational lessons. During their school time, students have a low ratio of an average of 10 students per classroom where they can focus in a more individualistic way.

Their academic performance depends on their work in the classroom. Inside the school, the students will learn values that will get them ready for their outside world. With their classes and academic performance, the students will be ready to enter their dream college or pursue any other passion they wish.

It will be nine months of joy, excitement, new illusions, times of nerves, and lots of work, all surrounded by people and staff who will give everything to make you happy and eager to cross your path with the ES Family

Casper’s Legacy.

Today, five years ago Casper Fernandez student and athlete at Emilio Sanchez Academy left us at just 16 years old in July 2017. He was a young, energetic tennis player ready to take on the world. He was passionate about everything he did, and most of all he loved his sport, tennis. Casper got into our hearts, and that is why, to this day, he is still such a big part of our Academy, we want to remember him forever.

In honor of his great talent and fighting spirit, we want to again announce the Casper Tour, a circuit recognized by the ATP, which will bring together players between 9 and 14 years old. The Emilio Sanchez Foundation promotes this Tour with the aim of giving opportunities to children to compete through sport, in order to raise funds and dedicate them to projects for the research of pediatric bone cancer, the same that Casper suffered. In addition, part of the proceeds will go towards sports scholarships to give tennis and life opportunities to young people.

Casper is an inspiration to children who are struggling as he did, and to all of us. He had a great aspiration to be able to play tennis and be a reference, and we want to make that dream come true. He demonstrated during the last months of his illness the love and passion he had for tennis, he showed the desire to become a great player with an exemplary attitude and being a role model on and off the courts. The Casper Tour is the starting point of our tribute towards him.

The Circuit was born in 2018 with the development of different tests at the national and international levels. This one started first playing in China and then in New York, passing through Barcelona, and ending in Madrid, Valencia, Atlanta, Florida, and finally Marbella. This year, it will be held in different locations organized by prestigious clubs. We are currently trying to link the tournament with schools and clubs so that it can reach many more people and school children.

The Tour wants to transmit sports and social objectives. As for the sports project, we want to achieve the building of more tennis schools that promote sport and tennis from the initiation, and in parallel with opening schools for young players undergoing cancer treatment. On the other hand, the main priority of the circuit is the formative aspect above the sporting one. We want to work with values such as effort, positive attitude, and above all, respect, to become an example on and off the court.

“Casper will remain in our hearts, his legacy will last forever with us along with his fighting spirit and his passion for the sport.”

Daniel Caverzaschi, a role model

Daniel Caverzaschi was born on July 11, 1993, with a malformation in his right leg. He is a role model. A national and world reference in the world of tennis. His ability has allowed him to achieve personal and sports success.

In the Emilio Sanchez Academy, we are fortunate to have him as a part of our academy, a part of our identity, a player who is next to us. We are lucky to see him improve every day, and we consider him an example for young people to follow. On Wednesday, June 15th we had the opportunity to listen to him, he talked in front of families and ES students who were graduating from the senior class of 2022. Daniel told us his story, making it a story full of motivation and overcoming daily challenges.

final043Dani is dedicated to wheelchair tennis, his goal is to work constantly and become the best player in the world. He has a degree in Economics and has combined his studies with his tennis career. As he always says; “With passion and grit, I manage to overcome life’s difficulties”. Thanks to his effort and discipline, he qualified for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, one of the most special moments of his life. Two years later, his father passed away, may he rest in peacemaking the situation be more thought. He said that his father was his mentor and his motivation, but Daniel never gave up in the face of the situation, he kept going and studying until he finished his degree that same year. He wanted to start his tennis career and be able to achieve his sports goals. Furthermore, he achieved it, in Rio 2016 he got his first Olympic diploma, and in Tokyo 2020 he got the first Spanish Paralympic diploma in an individual wheelchair. From there, he reached the top 10 in the world, currently, he is ranked number 12 competing with the top.

After having the opportunity to listen to him in the graduation speech of our ES students, it is not enough to say that he is a role model; he is an example of success and overcoming. He is a person who wants to continue training and thus grow to achieve his dreams. He gave us three life lessons, three lessons of vital importance for his journey, both personally and professionally.

dani caver1His story begins the day he was born, the day they realized he had a disability in his right leg. As he says, it was a shock for his family. That moment of disappointment and sadness lasted only a couple of days when everyone around him decided to treat him and give him a chance like a normal child. He wanted to be the best in his sport and in his life, or at least try to be. Paralympic’s sport was the luck of his life, the one that gave him the opportunity to train, compete and win. His message in this first experience is: “The sooner you accept your differences with honor and attitude, the better.”

The second is all about attitude. Dedicate time to what you love the most, to your passion. All experiences and activities in life, in this case for our ES students, have two sides, studying and playing tennis at the same time, no matter how many difficulties there are, if they are done with passion, they are worth it. According to Dani, “Success for me is to go for your goals and try to achieve them by doing your best”.

And finally, the third and last one, “Live the life you dream of since you were a child”. Not everything in life is rosy roads, there are many moments of frustration and difficulties, but they are part of the journey, the process, and education. As Daniel said, the power of resilience is one of the most important factors to internalize. The ability to face adversity, to be able to adapt and get up during the most difficult circumstances. We must project the future and move forward.

DSC_0024

From the ES Academy, we want to show our support to all people who want to be part of the world of sport through tennis. We want our students to grow as Daniel has done, applying these three lessons of life; Accept, Confront and Act. From the ES Academy, we want to convey a message to all players and students who have been, are, and will be part of the ES Academy and the world of tennis; “With passion and discipline you can achieve anything you set your mind to”.

Fernanda begins to write her story

¿Qué es el éxito? ¿Ganar?

Nadal the last of the mohicans

Look Mom! I Made It!

Graduation is quite the show at Emilio Sanchez American School. Joy. Tears. Dancing. And of course, the wonderful food! Soon our Senior Class of 2022 will be walking onto the stage receiving their diplomas and off of the stage into their bright futures. Furthermore, it is a celebration of their great efforts and growth throughout their journey as students, athletes, and humans. When the audience is seated and the air is full of anticipation of a magical evening, our academic principals Dr. Pamela Brisson, Naples, and Mel Rose, Barcelona, and the director of the academy Emilio Sanchez start the proceedings with their kind words. Then it is time for the stars of the evening. Starting with the Salutatorian (second highest high school GPA among the seniors) followed by the remainder of the seniors and finally, the Valedictorian (highest high school GPA of the graduating class), each one of the seniors recites their heartfelt speeches. Their gratitude and love for their “home away from home” is evident in every word. At least a tear is almost certainly shed… To reap the fruits of their labors, each senior is awarded their diploma and a ceremonial moving of the tassels on their caps takes place to formally mark the start of a new chapter in their lives.

Of our graduates in Naples, Emilio Jr. and Anna have spent their time at ESA and ESAS since they were in the 7th Grade. That amounts to a total of six years spent crafting the best version of themselves by pouring their heart and soul out into everything they do. The same goes for every single graduate. Emilio Jr. has seen the establishment and growth of the academy in Naples, FL. He is on track to pursue a colorful career in tennis and academics. Anna came a long way from Kazakhstan to hone her desire to be great and she certainly did. Ernesto, Sonya, Valeria, and Vishnu have all spent their high school years developing through ESA and ESAS. Ernesto has spent five years in the academy and has been able to find his passions to further his progress in his future career. Sonya has shown her potential as an athlete, student, and individual. Her efforts have surmounted to a bright future ahead of her. Valeria has demonstrated her drive here at ESA through her perseverance and growth. Vishnu came with a goal and will be leaving with an experience he will hold dearly for his life. His commendable progress and distinguishing accolades are admirable. Kunsh, Mario, Sampras, and Wesley were able to spend their final high school years at ESA and ESAS. Kunsh has constantly been dedicated to his efforts throughout his time here. His future is filled with bright possibilities. Mario is a hardworking student-athlete who has shown his identity in his short time here. Sampras is a member of the ESA family who has been an inspiration to many due to his incredible work ethic. Wesley is a bright student and talented athlete who has grown as a person in his time at ESA. He will surely continue to take strides in his career. Every student that graduates from ESA and ESAS demonstrate their embodiment of our academy’s values as well as their preparedness for whatever they choose to pursue moving forward.

XAV_0097

On the other hand, our Senior Class of 2022 from Barcelona, is formed by a great group of students, also developed for a long period of time in Barcelona and eager to face new challenges in their lives, both personally and professionally. This class, composed of Atomu Maruyama, Vittorio Nazzi, Alessandra Ceccarelli, Borjan Jovanov, Olga Mishenina, Ivan Yañez, Isabel Nubile, Oscar Bain, Cloe Clements, Tristan Mercier, Lorenzo Patel, Kael Shah, Ayana Klein, Andreas Chapides, Olga Olle and Rafael Candelas, have shined during their time at the academy. Despite all the hard work during this time, they have worked hard to achieve a positive mindset and to be in control of their new situation, the future of their lives. The success of these students can be reflected in the knowledge they have acquired, the passion they have put into their work on the court and in class, and above all, in their togetherness as a team of students, creating a community and a family.DSC00634

They have accumulated experiences, moments, memories, in each place of the ES Academy, countless hours on the courts and in the classroom to perfect their skills, that the truth, all of them will always be with them. Each of our students have left their mark and their own mark on this great family, and this will always be with us. In addition, we can not forget the friends who are taken forever, those who have met in a short time as those who met the first day, as the saying goes: “it is difficult to find a good friend, even more difficult to find it, but impossible to forget”.

It is the honor of the academy and school to come together and rejoice in this auspicious event. It is always a given that every member of ESA feels like a part of a big, crazy, family. That could not be more true on Graduation Day. Every student, teacher, coach, staff member, parent, and guest feels present and united under the roof of the ceremonial hall. Every word of every speech, every photo, and every video, each filled with the joy of a year speaks straight to everyone’s hearts. It is the sacrifice paid by everyone through their efforts that allows them to see the reward of their work.

The time has come to say goodbye, to say goodbye to what has been the school during their childhood and adolescence, to school life. LIFE IS A COMEBACK

Tournaments are an amazing opportunity for tennis players to develop their ability to compete against other players. They serve to develop players in their mental and physical aspects, athletes gain experience through play. It is clear that tennis has many benefits, in addition to promoting good habits and achieving better health for people, tennis allows for the development of values that are internalized and grow in each human being and each athlete.

The tournaments are sporting activities to recognize talent and sporting promises in order to develop their attitudes and skills to be able to continue their sporting or professional career. Winning and losing tournaments is part of the path of a tennis player, it is very important that players learn to cope with each situation and are able to not sink, move forward, and improve those aspects that didn’t work out in the match. Accepting a defeat requires a series of virtues as a player that allows them to really know their own game, and understand what the sport is. It is essential that players, in addition to recognizing their failures, learn to highlight their virtues and their great tennis actions, so they can enjoy and improve their game. Encouragement is part of the journey and development, both personal and sporting.

All these factors add up to give great importance to Fair Play, fair play. This refers to the honesty and correct behavior that athletes must develop towards their opponent, referee, and their audience. It is characterized by obedience and courtesy towards the rules of the game and avoiding problematic behavior towards the sport.

For these reasons, the Academy decides to organize competitive tournaments for athletes to build their competitive character and achieve new skills. Values such as respect; Based on tolerance and consideration. Effort; a friend of discipline, and perseverance, are reflected in the ES Academy and its tournaments, and what better way to take advantage of the opportunity than to participate in them. Our academy organizes federated and professional tournaments, international and local, throughout the year with the aim of promoting tennis for all levels and all ages.

In a tournament, you can develop comprehensive training in which all your skills are contemplated, motor, cognitive, social, and emotional. In order to become number one in the world, you have to overcome barriers and difficulties, and that is why tennis players create their own paths to achieve their best goals. And remember, the great victory is the one that comes with elegance, attitude, respect, fair play, desire, and discipline.

These past years we hosted several different tournaments in our ES Florida academy from USTA’s to UTR’s to ITF’s. In the United States, there is a rating called UTR which is important for the college pathway of the athletes,  there are many tournaments that are an opportunity for our junior athletes to build up their ranking and get their game to the next level. USTA is important to have the players compete, show their strengths on the court, and create a character for themselves. The USTA tournaments vary from level and, in our academy, we host different levels to bring opportunities to all the different players. ITF’s are our pro tournament circuit, our pro tournament circuit is made for the advanced players who are competing at a pro level to have the opportunity to reach the top of the world rankings. The ITF’s vary from $15k prize money tournaments to $100k prize money tournaments.

Chasing greatness

When signing up for the kids’ school year, parents start to wonder many things: Who will take care of my son/daughter? Will she be ok living away from home? Will she/he be happy? Will he/she improve the game?

But most important of all, they ask us, Will he/she have a good experience?

Every child is different, they all have their preferences, their needs, what they like, and what they don’t like and in tennis, they all have a unique game. They all have been taught the game of tennis but, some of them have never been taught the passion and the love for it. You will argue with me saying “you can not teach that” you’re wrong. It is true that children come to love tennis the more they play, the more they compete, and the more motivated they are. Usually, when they arrive, they are already tennis lovers and since it is a demanding sport in all aspects of the game technical, tactical, physical, and mental they have to learn how to find the joy in the sport and keep the passion in order not to burn out as some athletes do.

But how do we do that? How do we keep the children’s passion and love for this sport?
We have asked some of our athletes about it and here are their answers:
“In the Emilio Sanchez Academy, they taught me how to keep fighting and that there will always be one extra ball or one extra match to do better.”
“The coaches here have taught me the importance of self-value, of knowing my worth, and becoming the best I can become.”
“I have learned many things during my stay at the academy. I believe the individual treatment on the court made me feel valued, and for that my game is my best strength because I am confident.”
“I love tennis, I have always been very interested in the sport but after training many hours thanks to the coaches and staff, I was able to find the purpose of the sport.”
“I am a very shy person and when I step on the court, I take out the fire inside me to bring everything I got, I become a different person and for that I love it.”
“ This academy made me realize not only how much I love this sport but what it brings you, all the experiences, moments & friendships that I have made all along the journey.”
After hearing what some of our athletes had to say, we strongly believe in the consistency of the pathway that in our academy we are developing for young athletes. During their school year, the annual student-athletes have a tough schedule where they are required to perform at their best on the tennis court but also in the classroom. In our own ES American private school, the teachers are the masters of education of our student-athletes, they are the ones who help them academically, and who guide them through their pathway.
We understand the word student-athlete and the difficulties it is to become one, it is not an easy task to be always at the top of both, and for that we have developed our annual program, to give those young athletes the opportunity to become a student-athlete in an amazing facility that helps them, trains them, and guides them to become their best version in the classroom and on the court. There are many ups and downs in the athlete’s way and for that, we have the most experienced team among us to tutor each individual kid in their own groups to be able to assist them in a personal way.
Student-athlete is a word that combines two fields, academic, and sport. Being a student-athlete doesn’t mean your life is easier or with more benefits, you also struggle. During the school year, our students have to feel at home, they have to be comfortable in the environment that they are in and most importantly they have to strive. Our academy believes in the integration of all of our athletes on the tennis court, of all of our students in the classroom, and of all of our children in life. We want to give the best of ourselves, so our students can become the best learners and the best tennis players. No matter what their goals are, we are together to follow a pathway to help them become successful.

Why is so important for us to build character?
According to Google, the character is defined as “the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.” So why on an individual? In our academy, we are a small family who together can bring up the best in each other. Each student is different and, each athlete is different. Some athletes have better forehands, some have a better mindset and some have an overall better game but, our purpose is to bring each individual talent to rise, and work on each skill that the athlete has to make it better. Sometimes it takes sacrifices from the athletes to perform at their highest each and every day but, as the saying, hard work pays off.

In the classroom or at the court, each student-athlete and, next to our academy coaches, teachers, and staff members, your children will be able to follow their goals and have a successful pathway.
